Important Update on Maui Short Term Vacation Rentals

An important update.


You may have heard that recently the county of Maui is proposing a ban on short term vacation rentals in apartment zoned areas of Maui. For west Maui, this would start as soon as January 2025, the rest of Maui, six months later. The rationale is that too many properties that could be used by local residents, especially those that lost their home in the Lahaina fire, are used as vacation rentals today. That banning the use of these properties for short term will increase the supply of long term.


While it’s likely this legislation will either be modified or delayed in implementation, it’s important to note that the Sands of Kahana, and our unit there, is in a Hotel designated zone and not subject to any short term rental ban. For anyone considering Hale Honu, we are, and will continue to be, a fully legal and permitted short term vacation rental property, not subject to this proposed legislation.
